Two huge skyscrapers over 40-storeys high could tower over South London market site
Hundreds of new homes could be built in a huge skyscraper development on the site of a South London food market. Developers want to construct two skyscrapers, both more than 40 storeys high, near Mercato Metropolitano market in Southwark.
Under the plans four towers containing 838 flats would be built on a stretch of land bordered by Newington Causeway, Borough Road and Newington Court in Elephant and Castle. The tallest skyscraper would be 46 storeys high with the smaller one reaching 42 storeys. The two other buildings would be 18 storeys and 10 storeys high.
Offices, shops and a new public square would also be created as part of the redevelopment of the area. Plans are expected to be submitted to Southwark Council in summer.

The future of Mercato Metropolitano market – which calls itself “London’s first sustainable community market” – is uncertain. But developers said they are holding ongoing “constructive” discussions with the market about its future. Mercato Metropolitano is a 10 minute walk from Elephant and Castle Shopping Center which was bulldozed in 2021 as part of a regeneration project. Mercato Metropolitano has been based in Elephant and Castle since 2016.
The London School of Music Theatre, radio station Resonance FM and car rental company Carpoint Vehicle Hire Ltd also are also based on the site. Developers, led by house builder Berkeley Homes, have renamed the site Borough Triangle in a node to the shape of the area. Berkeley Homes’ proposals for the site, outlined on the Borough Triangle website, read: “Our Vision for Borough Triangle is to create an exciting new destination in North Elephant that is designed around people; connecting residents and the wider community by creating a new place to live, work, socialize and play.”

Plans for the site continue: “We are proposing a total of 838 new homes across the development – this will include affordable homes. We are seeking to maximize the delivery of affordable housing while working within the constraints of the site and the challenging economic environment. We are committed to ensuring that these new homes are of the highest quality.
“The vision for Borough Triangle includes new shopping, dining, work, and leisure opportunities to create a new and exciting destination for the community. […] We greatly appreciate the contribution Mercato Metropolitano makes to the local area and we are continuing to have constructive discussions regarding its future.”
The two planned skyscrapers would be located on the western side of the site towards Elephant and Castle and the railway line. The 18 storey tower block would be built on the corner of Borough Road and Newington Causeway, while the smallest 10 storey building would face Newington Causeway.
City Hall’s 2021 London Plan identified space for 5,000 extra homes and the potential to create 10,000 new jobs in Elephant and Castle. Southwark Council has said any redevelopment of the Borough Triangle site must create at least 438 new homes.
