Oris Johnson is ahead of the expected publication of the Sue Gray report at partygate a week ago in an all-or-nothing game.

Many Tory MPs have said they will await the results before deciding whether to push for a confidence vote that could oust him.

At the same time, the prime minister is fighting allegations of Islamophobia after MP Nusrat Ghani claimed she was told she had been sacked as junior minister over concerns about her “being Muslim”.

Over the weekend, two cabinet ministers – Health Minister Sajid Javid and Education Minister Nadhim Zahawi – backed calls for an inquiry into their treatment.

In a sign of tensions within the party, Chief Whip Mark Spencer – who admitted having spoken to Ms Ghani – furiously denied her claims, saying they were “completely false” and “defamatory”.
