Farm shop cafe near London named one of the best in UK and known for meat pies, fudge and homegrown asparagus
One farm shop near London was one of four finalists across the country for ‘The Small Farm Shop Award’ at the prestigious Farm Retail Association awards this year. The winner was announced on the 1st March during a three-day conference in Newcastle.
Groombridge Farm Shop in Tunbridge Wells was nominated alongside Lawn Farm Shop (Wiltshire), Bell’s Farm Shop (Stourport), Newton Farm Shop (Somerset). The winner selected was Newton Farm Foods.
However, it would be criminal not to find out more about this special farm shop, and it’s not hard to see why they were nominated. Founded in 1993 as ‘The Asparagus Hut,’ the farm shop has flourished over the years for local producers to showcase their products.
Groombridge encompasses fresh and prepared food, drinks and pantry. Some of their 50 local suppliers include Bodiam Meat & Pie Co, Meopham Valley Vineyard and Southborough Butcher.
On top of this, they are passionate about seasonality and growing their local customer base. Ninety per cent of all produce for sale in the farm shop comes from within Kent and Sussex. This also reduces packaging and cuts down on imports.
Groombridge is known for their asparagus in the local area, and dedicate 12 acres of their farm land to grow these garden vegetables. The farm shop offers a wide range of qualities and sizes to suit all palettes, from the very tender to wild asparagus.
They also serve up high class deli meat products such as game, goat, beef and lamb thanks to their local butcher. The farm shop also offers locally made fudge straight from Kent and real luxury dairy ice cream. Not to mention, Meopham Valley Vineyard provide gorgeous and organic wines for the shop.
In an interview in December 2021, the shop manager Samantha said: “We rely on our local community and customers to keep on supporting us year on year. It’s been a challenging time with the Covid-19 pandemic, we have had to change and adapt As a result of doing collections and deliveries in 2019 we set up our website which enables customers to pre-order and either come to the shop or have a local delivery.
“We are committed to growing the best asparagus we can, all our own soft fruits and seasonal produce. We are very fortunate to grow our own produce down the road! We want customers to be able to buy only what they need, to reduce food packaging and waste.
“We try and stock as many local suppliers as possible, from bakery, meat and dairy, chocolate and drinks. We are fortunate enough to have many talented individuals and businesses on our doorstep and customers who value the ability to ‘shop local’.”
Fello farm shops and retailers were judged on their quality of food, service, customer proposition and facilities.
